Sister of slain Texas soldier Vanessa Guillen said she voted for former President Donald Trump , dismissing reports that he refused to pay for the Army specialist ’s funeral and disparaged her ethnicity. Mayra Guillen , who has been an advocate for justice following her sister’s murder, defended Trump, saying he had shown nothing but respect to her family.
The report by The Atlantic, suggested that Trump initially offered to pay for the funeral but became angry when he saw the costs. The piece alleged that Trump, in frustration, remarked, “It doesn’t cost $60,000 to bury a f--king Mexican!” before ordering his then-Chief of Staff, Mark Meadows, not to pay the bill.
Mayra Guillen responded to the article on social media, writing: “Wow. I don’t appreciate how you are exploiting my sister’s death for politics—hurtful and disrespectful to the important changes she made for service members. President Donald Trump did nothing but show respect to my family and Vanessa. In fact, I voted for President Trump today. My sister’s death was never to be politicised. Unbelievable.”
Vanessa Guillen, a 20-year-old Army private, was tragically murdered in April 2020 by a fellow soldier at Fort Hood , Texas. Her brutal killing sparked widespread outrage and led to reforms in how the military handles sexual harassment claims, which Vanessa had reportedly suffered before her death.
According to The Atlantic, Trump expressed sympathy during a meeting with the Guillen family, telling them: "Vanessa was respected and loved by everybody, including the military." He allegedly promised to assist the family financially with the funeral.
The allegations against Trump come amid a wave of criticisms from former officials, including retired Marine General John Kelly. In the interview, Kelly claimed Trump wanted "the kind of generals Hitler had," and suggested he would rule like a dictator if re-elected. Trump’s campaign has denied these claims, labelling them as "absolutely false."
