A peaceful service at a suburban Detroit church in Michigan turned chaotic after a gunman opened fire on Sunday, wounding a security guard before being shot and killed by the same guard.
The incident occurred just before 11 am (local time) at Crosspointe Community Church in Wayne, a city of about 17,000 people located west of Detroit.
According to pastor Bobby Kelly Jr , about 150 people, including children, were in attendance when the gunman suddenly opened fire during the service.
Viral video captures terrifying moments
A video of the church service shows the congregation seated and applauding, moments before chaos erupts. A sudden shout from the back causes people to look around in confusion. Within seconds, panic takes hold, adults and children duck beneath the seats, and some begin to flee as the sound of gunfire fills the sanctuary.
Pastor Kelly told The Detroit News that during the shooting, a church member ran over the gunman with his truck, briefly incapacitating him. That split-second act gave the security guard, already shot in the leg, enough time to return fire, fatally striking the attacker.
Police confirmed that the injured person was the church's security guard. He was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover. No one else was physically harmed.
