French First Lady Brigitte Macron appeared to publicly shove her husband, President Emmanuel Macron , in the face before delivering a stinging four-word remark, according to a professional lip reader .
The incident unfolded as the French president’s plane landed in Hanoi on Sunday evening. As the aircraft door opened, Brigitte, 72, placed both hands on her husband’s face and firmly pushed him away in front of waiting cameras.
In footage that has since gone viral, Macron, 47, is seen trying to keep his composure. The French president says “Hi,” before stepping forward to greet his wife. However, she immediately brushes him off and walks ahead, gripping the handrail instead of taking his offered arm, the New York Post quoted.
A lip reader consulted by The Express decoded the tense exchange, saying that the first lady dodged his arm and chose to cling to the railing, at the top of the stairs. “As she passes, she appears to mutter, ‘Dégage, espèce de loser,’ translated in English, ‘Stay away, you loser.’”
Moments later, the president is said to have replied, “Essayons, s’il te plaît” (“Let’s try, please?”), only for Brigitte to curtly respond, “Non.”
The lip reader concluded, “His closing expression, and the phrase lipread as ‘Je vois,’ translated in english “I see” says it all.”
Immediately after the shove, Macron looked visibly startled but swiftly composed himself as he greeted Vietnamese officials on the tarmac.
Initially, the Élysée Palace dismissed the clip as doctored. But amid mounting attention, the president’s office confirmed the footage was real.
Brushing off the fuss during a press conference on Monday, Macron said, “We are squabbling and, rather, joking with my wife,” and accused critics of blowing the moment out of proportion.
It’s being turned into “a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe. People are saying all sorts of nonsense. Everyone needs to calm down,” he said.
The Macrons, who have been married since 2007, met in 1993 when Brigitte was a 39-year-old teacher and Emmanuel was her 15-year-old pupil, and a classmate of her daughter.
