US Vice President Kamala Harris spoke with former President Donald Trump over the phone on Tuesday, expressing her relief that he was unharmed following a reported shooting near his Florida golf course.

The conversation, described as "cordial and brief," by White House, came after gunfire was reported near Trump's West Palm Beach golf club on Sunday.

Trump’s campaign confirmed his safety following the incident, while the FBI launched an investigation, calling it an "attempted assassination."

A White House official released a statement saying, "Vice President Harris called former President Trump this afternoon to directly express her gratitude that he is safe. The conversation was brief and cordial."

The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, faces charges of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number, according to a CNN report. Routh remains in custody, with a detention hearing scheduled for September 23 and arraignment on September 30.

This marks the second assassination attempt targeting Trump during his current presidential campaign. He was previously targeted during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Earlier on Sunday, Vice President Harris expressed her relief on social media, writing, "I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump’s property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America."

President Joe Biden also commented on the incident, stating he was "relieved" that Trump was unharmed. He praised the Secret Service for their vigilance and confirmed that a suspect was in custody, adding that the investigation was ongoing.

"I commend the Secret Service and their law enforcement partners for their efforts to keep the former President and those around him safe," Biden said. "There is no place for political violence in our country."

Biden emphasized that he has directed federal law enforcement to provide every resource necessary to ensure Trump’s continued safety.
