The great Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu once described tea as the elixir of life but if we look at the level of adulteration going around, even tea is no longer pure. And this shift has also increased the risk of health issues which can be even deadly.

Tea, while the name might sound to be just a beverage but for Indian, it is an integral part of households. For many, the day begins with a cup of milk tea, that not just gives instant energy, it also helps boost overall health. Tea is said to be rich in antioxidants like catechins and polyphenols, which help neutralize free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and potentially lowering the risk of chronic diseases. Also, as per experts, regular tea consumption may help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and improve HDL (good) cholesterol levels, contributing to better cardiovascular health. And it is also said hat tea can help reduce blood pressure, which is beneficial for heart health.

Other side effects of adulterated tea
Adulterated tea might contain harmful levels of pesticides, herbicides, or other chemicals. It is said that chronic exposure to these substances can lead to health issues such as cancer, hormonal imbalances, or neurological problems. Contamination with heavy metals like lead, arsenic, or cadmium can lead to serious health issues, including kidney damage, liver disease, and neurological disorders. Adulterated tea may contain substances not listed on the label, which can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. As per experts, symptoms can range from mild (such as rashes or itching) to severe (such as anaphylaxis).

Keeping the rising rate of health issues due to food adulteration, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently released a video on social media platform X on how one can do tea leaves adulteration test at home to prevent adulteration-related health issues.
