NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party termed Mamata Banerjee 's visit to the doctors' protest a "media photo-op" and accused her of attempting to "sow seeds of suspicion among the medical fraternity."

The West Bengal chief minister visited the junior doctors protesting at Swasthya Bhawan in Salt Lake, Kolkata, earlier today and assured the demonstrators of taking appropriate action if someone was found guilty.

"She didn’t interact or for that matter even hear the protesting doctors. This was just a media photo-op to sow seeds of suspicion among the medical fraternity," BJP leader Amit Malviya said.

Questioning Banerjee's intentions over the visit, Malviya added, "She must be condemned in the strongest possible terms for being sly and insincere. She clearly lacks intent to resolve the impasse and deliver justice to the rape and murder victim of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. Her inflated ego is damaging West Bengal’s public healthcare sector."

Meanwhile, Banerjee has announced the dissolution of patient welfare committees in all state-run hospitals with immediate effect, calling it the "last attempt to resolve the crisis."

The TMC matriarch also urged the doctors to resume work.

The junior doctors have been protesting, calling for improved security at state-run hospitals and the dismissal of senior officials following the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The protests, which have persisted for over a month following the rape and murder of a doctor on August 9, have severely disrupted public healthcare services in the state. The government has reported that 29 people have died as a result of the protests, allegedly due to a lack of medical treatment.
