TMC leader Saugata Roy says Kalyan Banerjee 'misbehaved' with woman MP, calls WhatsApp chat leak 'shameful'

NEW DELHI: Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and MP Saugata Roy on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the reported confrontation between fellow MPs Kirti Azad and Kalyan Banerjee , which allegedly took place at the Election Commission headquarters earlier this month.

In a video shared by IANS, Roy said, “We are saddened, this should not have happened. I do not know whether this clash truly occurred or not. But if it did, it’s unfortunate.”

The controversy erupted after BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya shared a video on social media, claiming it showed a public altercation between two TMC MPs at the EC office on April 4. Malviya also released screenshots of a heated exchange between the MPs in the party’s official WhatsApp group.

Reacting to the leaked chats and the tone of the exchanges, Roy said, “The WhatsApp chats of the party being leaked is unfortunate. The language used by Kalyan Banerjee is unfortunate. I hope that the party leadership will take cognizance of the matter.”

He further added, “Many of our party members wanted to complain to Mamata Banerjee, but whether they did or not, I don't know. Kalyan Banerjee misbehaved with a lady MP, she protested and revolted and then all the MPs went against Kalyan Banerjee.”

While the authenticity of the video has not been independently verified, the public nature of the spat and the internal messaging leaks have sparked renewed scrutiny of factionalism within the TMC.

Roy’s comments come amid speculation over rising tensions within TMC, at a time when the party is focused on consolidating its position ahead of the Lok Sabha elections .
