NEW DELHI: Robert Vadra expressed happiness over his wife Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s nomination for the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-elections, saying that her father Rajiv Gandhi would have been proud to see this moment had he been alive.

Talking about Priyanka's decision to contest in the election, Vadra said, "I am delighted that Priyanka is now taking the step of thinking for herself. She will work hard for herself, and campaign for herself. I think it has been 35 years since I have known her, I have seen her always working hard for others, for her family and people of the country. She never thought for herself. But I am happy that Congress thought of making her contest from Wayanad. I think, had Rajiv ji been alive, he would have been delighted."

Speaking about whether he will join politics, Vadra mentioned that although he remains committed to serving people through his charity work, he is open to entering active politics if the public and his family desire it.

"I always wanted Priyanka to enter Parliament, not just campaign. As for me, I am happy being among the people, serving them on the ground. But if people want me in politics, I will take that step. When the time comes, whatever Congress and my family decide, I will strengthen my resolve," he said.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra filed her nomination papers on Wednesday, marking her electoral debut. She was accompanied by senior party leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, during a massive roadshow in Wayanad.

The by-election for the seat, vacated by Rahul Gandhi after his election to the Lok Sabha from Raebareli, is scheduled for November 13, coinciding with the first phase of assembly elections in Jharkhand and bypolls in 47 assembly seats across 15 states.

Congress had officially approved Priyanka Gandhi's candidacy on October 15, following the Election Commission's announcement of the bypoll schedule.
