Govt has failed to act on 'mass unemployment crisis': Congress

NEW DELHI: Continuing its attack on Modi government over its first 100 days in office in the third term, Congress on Tuesday said Centre has failed to act on "mass unemployment crisis ".

Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the crisis is caused by "decimation of job creating MSMEs through the Tughlaqian demonetisation , a hastily rushed through GST, an unplanned Covid-19 lockdown, and rising imports from China. The final straw was the PM's economic policy of favouring large conglomerates".

Ramesh went on to say that India's unemployment rate is the highest it has been in 45 years, with unemployment rate for graduate youth at 42%. He said there is an abundance of data proving the extent of this crisis, and two damning trends stood out - failure to create sufficient employment and shrinking of formal salaried jobs. "For the first time in decades, under Modi's mismanagement, the absolute number of workers in agriculture is increasing. This goes against the very basic concept of economic modernisation, which every developed country along the world has gone through," he said.

Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said, "Only a brief scan of major events since June 4 will tell you how disastrous this regime has already been: Manipur is still on fire, after NEET-UG fiasco, multiple examinations have been cancelled due to paper leaks and 38 railway accidents since June 2024. All that the current govt can do is create fake PR and spread falsehood and hatred to divert attention," he added.
