NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old BEd student from FM Autonomous College in Balasore succumbed to burn injuries on Monday, days after attempting self-immolation during a protest against alleged sexual harassment by a senior faculty member.
From protest to tragedy: Here are 10 key details
Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi officially confirmed the death of the 20-year-old student on Tuesday. The victim, a second-year BEd student at FM Autonomous College, had attempted self-immolation on July 12 after alleging sexual harassment by a senior faculty member and the inaction of the college administration.
After her death, a post-mortem was conducted at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, and her body was sent to her native village in Bhogorai, Balasore, for cremation. A pall of gloom descended over the village as relatives and friends gathered to bid her farewell.
The student was undergoing intensive treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after sustaining 90% burn injuries. Despite being placed on mechanical ventilation and receiving continuous resuscitation efforts including renal replacement therapy, doctors declared her clinically dead at 11:46pm on July 14.
The victim had set herself ablaze outside the college gate during a protest that had been ongoing since July 1. Students had been peacefully demonstrating for action against the head of the education department, who she accused of repeated harassment and academic manipulation.
Prior to the self-immolation, the girl had submitted multiple written complaints to the college administration. She claimed that the faculty member had threatened to fail her in examinations if she did not comply with his advances, yet no substantial action was taken by the authorities.
A male student who tried to save the girl also sustained burn injuries in the incident. The horrifying act, which was captured on CCTV, led to massive outrage among students, women's groups, and political leaders across Odisha.
Following the incident, the assistant professor was arrested and suspended after preliminary investigation found prima facie evidence of misconduct. The college principal was also suspended for failing to take timely and appropriate action, and was later arrested.
An official statement from AIIMS detailed the treatment efforts. It said the victim was immediately resuscitated with IV fluids and antibiotics, intubated, and placed on life support in the burns ICU, but her condition deteriorated rapidly due to the severity of her injuries.
The Odisha Higher Education Department cited the college's gross negligence in handling the harassment complaints. The principal’s suspension was issued for failure to respond appropriately to the victim’s allegations and mishandling of the grievance redressal process. Later, the principal was arrested on Monday.
Congress workers staged a protest outside AIIMS Bhubaneswar early on Tuesday morning, demanding justice and accountability. The protesters were later detained by police, as the incident continues to stir political and public outrage across the state
