Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday requested the people of Wayanad to "support and protect" his sister Priyanka who jumped into active politics by filing nomination papers for upcoming bypolls .

In an emotional post on X, Rahul Gandhi wrote, "Priyanka has always been someone who would sacrifice anything for her family and friends, and this quality will make her an exceptional MP for Wayanad. To her, the people of Wayanad are family."

"As her brother, I ask you to support and protect her as you have done for me. I will always stand by Wayanad as your unofficial MP," he added.

Earlier in the day, the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha also spearheaded the campaign for his sister in Wayanad. Addressing a rally, Rahul expressed his deep gratitude towards the constituency, stating, "What Wayanad has done for me cannot be expressed in words; the only way to express it is through actions."

He further highlighted the unique position of Wayanad, declaring it as the only constituency in the country with two Members of Parliament. "Wayanad is the constituency in the country that has two MPs. One is the official and the other is the unofficial MP," Rahul said following a roadshow with his sibling. He assured the people of Wayanad that both he and his sister would work tirelessly to safeguard the interests of the constituency.

Rahul won the recent Lok Sabha elections from both Wayanad and Raebareli. The Congress decided to field Priyanka Gandhi in the bypolls after Rahul decided to retain family bastion Raebareli.

Priyanka signed her nomination papers earlier in the day at a local resort, with top party leaders, including her mother and chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party Sonia Gandhi as well as Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge by her side.

Priyanka will compete against Navya Haridas from BJP and Sathyan Mokeri from the Left Democratic Front (LDF). Navya Haridas is noted for serving two terms as a Kozhikode Corporation councillor. The by-election is set for November 13.
