97% cases of atrocities against SCs in 2022 reported from 13 states; Uttar Pradesh at top: Government report

NEW DELHI: 97% cases of atrocities against Scheduled Caste people in 2022 was reported 13 states with Uttar Pradesh on top government report under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

In 2022, out of 51,656 cases registered under the law for SCs, UP reported 12,287 cases, accounting for 23.78% of the total. Rajasthan followed with 8,651 cases (16.75%), while Madhya Pradesh had 7,732 cases, making up 14.97%.

"Thirteen states, cumulatively accounting for 97.7% (51,656) of the total cases (52,866) relating to offences of atrocities against members of SCs, registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, in conjunction with the Indian Penal Code, during the year 2022," the report said.

The report also pinpointed specific districts that are particularly vulnerable to atrocities, with only 10 states and Union territories acknowledging such districts. The remaining states reported that there were no districts susceptible to these types of incidents.

"No atrocity prone areas have been identified in the State of Uttar Pradesh," the report.

The report noted that SC/ST protection cells have been established in several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, NCT of Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Puducherry.
