If you're someone who struggles to escape doom scrolling during work hours or finds yourself endlessly scrolling through YouTube Shorts in your free time, the Google-owned company is now rolling out a solution to limit your watch time. YouTube has introduced a feature for its Shorts platform, allowing mobile users to set customisable daily limits on how long they can scroll through video feeds.
The move aims to help viewers better manage their time and curb endless scrolling, The Verge reported.
How this YouTube Shorts daily limit feature works
When a user reaches their self-imposed time limit, they will receive a notification stating that Shorts has been paused for the remainder of the day. While this notification is dismissible, the feature empowers users to honour their own restrictions.
“Shorts are a core part of the YouTube experience,” YouTube said in its announcement.
“Setting a scrolling time limit on the Shorts feed allows for this exploration while helping users be more deliberate about their viewing habits and manage their time effectively,” the company added.
The option to set and adjust these custom time limits for Shorts can be found within the YouTube account settings. YouTube states that the feature is "beginning to roll out" today, so it may take some time to become available for all mobile users.
The company also plans to expand this feature to parental controls “later this year,” where these limit notifications for children will be non-dismissible, offering a more proactive approach to managing kids' screen time.
Notably, this new functionality mirrors similar optional screen time limits offered by other social media platforms like Instagram. The Verge reports that TikTok also offers the same feature and is the only platform that currently extends this feature to web users as well.
