Apple is said to be planning a two-stage transition to an all-screen iPhone design. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to bring a radical change in the design on iPhone for the 20th anniversary of iPhone in 2027.
As per the report, the first step of the design transition is said to come with iPhone 15 which is expected to launch in 2025. Apple iPhone 17 is expected feature a smaller Dynamic Island — Apple’s pill-shaped cutout placed in the centre of the display which consists of FaceIS and front camera. Then by 2026, the company is rumoured to bring an under-display Face ID leaving only a small punch-hole for the front camera in iPhone 18 Pro.
The report further suggests that in 2027 with iPhone 20 , Apple is expected to bring both Face ID and the front camera fully hidden beneath the display, achieving a seamless, edge-to-edge screen with no notches, cutouts, or bezels. The design may also feature curved glass edges and a ‘monolithic’ look, in which both the front, sides and back flowing on a continuous surface.
This phased approach allows Apple to refine the complex under-display technology, which involves accurately capturing light and data through the display pixels, before implementing it across the entire iPhone lineup. The current Dynamic Island, introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro, has been a defining feature, dynamically expanding and shrinking to display alerts, activities, and interactions. Its eventual removal signifies Apple's long-term vision for seamless, edge-to-edge displays.
