Apple may ask the biggest iPhone supplier to build AI servers for Apple Intelligence

Send Push
Apple is reportedly in discussions with the largest iPhone supplier, Foxconn, to manufacture specialised servers for its Apple Intelligence AI platform. According to a report by Nikkei Asia, this move will help Apple's growing investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and its desire to enhance its computational capabilities. Foxconn already provides similar server manufacturing services for Nvidia , whose GB200 system is currently the world's most powerful AI computing platform. Apple hopes to leverage Foxconn's expertise to build servers powered by Apple Silicon, the same technology used in its Macs and iPads. While Apple's server volume is expected to be smaller than Nvidia's, this partnership highlights the company's ambition to expand its AI infrastructure and compete in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

How Foxconn’s relationship with Nvidia may stop it from committing to Apple

The report also claims that Foxconn's commitment to Nvidia's server projects may hinder its ability to partner with Apple for AI server production. As a result, Apple is exploring alternative manufacturers, including Lenovo and smaller suppliers, to meet its growing AI infrastructure needs. This comes as Apple expands its Apple Intelligence features to more devices and prepares for broader language support.

Apple intelligence is now available in iPhones, iPads and Macs

Apple's first wave of AI features, launching with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, introduces tools like intelligent writing assistance, advanced photo editing, and an upgraded Siri interface. Key features include:

  • Writing Tools: Enables rewriting, proofreading, and summarising text across apps.
  • Clean Up: Removes background objects from images without affecting the main subject.
  • Memory Movies: Creates custom video montages from photos.
  • Enhanced Search in Photos: Supports natural language search and auto-completion.
  • Siri Redesign: Offers visual updates, context maintenance, and dual input modes.
  • Call Recording & Transcription: Provides recording, transcription, and summaries for calls.
  • Notification Summaries & Focus Mode: Uses AI to filter and summarise notifications.

Supported on iPhone 16 models, iPads with M1 chips or newer, and Macs with M1 processors or later, the rollout starts with US English and will expand globally in 2025. Additional features, such as AI-powered image tools and ChatGPT integration with Siri, are expected later this year.
