A growing taste for the exotic
Over the last five years, the demand for imported fruits has quietly but steadily climbed. Once limited to gourmet stores or special occasions, fruits like dragon fruit, kiwi, longan, mangosteen, passion fruit, and avocados are now weekly additions to shopping bags. “Avocados and dragon fruit sell almost as well as apples these days,” says Azim, a fruit vendor at Park Circus. “They’re on the pricier side, but that doesn’t affect the sale,” he explained. Kolkata’s fruit lovers are embracing these tropical treats with open arms.
