Sunny Deol's latest film Jaat was expected to ride high on the massive goodwill generated by the blockbuster Gadar 2.However, early trends from North America paint a starkly different picture for Jaat, as the film is now staring at a significant financial loss in the region.
In its first four days, Jaat managed to collect only USD 338,751 in North America. By the early evening of day five, it had added another USD 28,631, bringing its cumulative total to roughly USD 367,382. This is a worrying figure, considering that the break-even mark for the film is pegged at around USD 1.4 million in the region. Based on the current pace, industry analysts estimate that the film will end its North America run at just 35-40% of the breakeven target, resulting in a loss margin of around 60-65%.
The film was acquired on an MG (Minimum Guarantee) basis overseas, with buyers betting big on Sunny Deol’s post-Gadar 2 resurgence. Unfortunately, that bet appears to be misfiring, as Jaat lacks the mass connect and emotional nostalgia that helped Gadar 2 soar across demographics.
Domestically, Jaat has shown a relatively decent trend, earning Rs 47.75 crore in India over its first five days. While these numbers reflect a moderate level of acceptance among the Indian audience, they are far from blockbuster territory. Moreover, the film’s heavy reliance on action tropes and its dated storytelling may not be helping its cause in urban centres and international markets.
It would be interesting to see how the film would fare from here on in India and overseas and how much ground it can cover to minimise the losses.Sunny Deol has some big films lined up in the future from Border 2 with Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty to Ramayan with Ranbir Kapoor and Yash to Lahore 1947 with Aamir Khan and Preity Zinta.
