COIMBATORE: The national highways (NH) wing of the state highways department on Monday began construction of a flyover on the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam Road to alleviate traffic congestions. The flyover will span a distance of 975 metre from Alagesan Road Junction to Eru company, with a width of 16.61 metre. It will accommodate four lanes of traffic.
The construction of the flyover is expected to be completed in two years.
The ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) has given Rs 75.05 crore to the NH wing for the construction of the flyover on the Mettupalayam Road.
The project will entail the construction of 23 pillars and 22 decks.
"We are going to execute the flyover project in three distinct phases. In the initial phase, we will excavate deep pits to establish six pillars," said an official from the NH wing.
He said the contractor had been instructed to deploy additional workforce to operate round the clock, ensuring timely completion of the project. The contract has been awarded to KCP Infra Ltd.
"The flyover construction on the Mettupalayam Road does not necessitate any land acquisition. With seven metre of space available on either side, we have not diverted the vehicles. Consequently, the flow of traffic will not be significantly disrupted. However, during peak hours, vehicle movement is expected to decelerate," he added.
There are already two flyovers on the Coimbatore -Mettupalayam Road in the city limits, at Kavundampalayam and GN Mills.
NH wing officials disclosed that the MoRTH has sanctioned funds for the construction of a flyover at Singanallur on the congested Trichy Road. "We are going to initiate the retendering process imminently. Once the tender is awarded, the construction work will commence," said the official.
The NH wing officials were contemplating construction of a flyover at Saravanampatti on the Coimbatore – Sathyamangalam Road. However, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is planning to erect pillars in the stretch for the implementation of the metro rail project. "CMRL officials visited the stretch and conducted a joint inspection with us. If CMRL grants us approval to construct the flyover at Saravanampatti, we will initiate the tendering process. Otherwise, it may encounter delays," he added.
