Bhopal: Governor Mangubhai Patel inaugurated the genetic analysis laboratory and DNA sequencer machine at BMHRC's sickle cell anaemia competence centre. He also launched a seminar titled "Genetic Analysis and Integrated Approach in the Management of Sickle Cell Anaemia" and interacted with affected children.

The event was attended by MP tribal affairs minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, NHM director Dr Saloni Sidana, ICMR-NIIH director Dr Manisha Madkaikar, and BMHRC director-in-charge Dr Manisha Shrivastava. ICMR director general Dr Rajiv Bahl participated virtually. Sickle cell patients and their families attended the event, which included the release of an informative directory and distribution of health kits and nutritional supplies.

Governor Patel, addressing the audience, emphasised Prime Minister Modi's objective to eliminate sickle cell from India by 2047. He stressed the collective responsibility to achieve this goal through testing and treatment. The Governor acknowledged BMHRC's efforts, noting that whilst sickle cell's genetic nature presents complex challenges, the DNA sequencer provides scientists an opportunity to address the disease at its foundation.

Minister Shah praised Governor Patel's awareness initiatives, noting increased public understanding of sickle cell. Dr Bahl highlighted BMHRC's role as Central India's Sickle Cell Competence Centre, citing the screening of over 800 tribal students. He outlined ICMR's commitment to research and clinical trials for new treatments.

Dr Sidana reported positive outcomes in districts like Dindori, Jhabua, and Alirajpur, where sickle cell status influences marriage decisions. She noted Madhya Pradesh's achievement in screening over 1 crore people, making it the first state to meet govt targets. Dr Shrivastava reaffirmed BMHRC's dedication to achieving a "Sickle Cell Free India". Dr Madkaikar from ICMR-NIIH, Mumbai, also contributed to the symposium.
