CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu govt has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with construction and mining equipment maker Caterpillar in the presence of CM M K Stalin in Chicago.

The company will invest 500 crore to expand its construction equipment manufacturing facilities in Tiruvallur and Krishnagiri districts.

"The longstanding association between Caterpillar and Tamil Nadu has been further strengthened by new investments," Stalin posted on X on Thursday after signing the MoU with Caterpillar senior vice president Kirk Eppler and country manager Bhuvan Ananthakrishnan.

During this trip to the US, Stalin has so far signed MoUs worth 7,016 crore with 16 companies in San Francisco and Chicago.

Caterpillar's plant at Tiruvallur, established in 1971, is its first production unit in the country and serves compact construction and mining under Cat and Hindustan brands. It employs around 1,500 people.

The plant makes backhoe loaders, skid steer loaders, off-highway trucks and hydraulic excavators. Its Hosur facility, which caters to power generation and transmission, produces engines, gensets and drivetrain transmissions.
