Kendrapada: A couple from Jajpur district's Binjharpur village was sentenced to life imprisonment on Saturday for the 2016 killing of their 15-year-old pregnant daughter. They were also fined Rs 10,000 each and will have to undergo an additional six-month jail term if they failed to pay.
The convicts, Nakul Jena (50) and Sanju Jena (48), killed their four-month pregnant daughter at home by burning her body using kerosene and dumped the ashes in the Kharasrota river to destroy evidence on Feb 14, 2016. A neighbour, Mataji Jena, filed an FIR on Feb 16, 2016, after hearing the girl's cries on the night of the murder.
During the investigation, the couple confessed that they killed their daughter because she refused to reveal the identity of the man responsible for her pregnancy. Police recovered ashes and charred bone fragments from the couple's orchard, which were confirmed to be human remains through DNA testing at the State Forensic Science Laboratory, Bhubaneswar.
Special public prosecutor Rajendra Prasad Nayak said the court relied on DNA evidence and testimonies from 30 witnesses to convict the couple.
