BHUBANESWAR: Police on Saturday arrested 11 persons, including two locally influential BJD leaders, for allegedly physically assaulting a man in an alleged kangaroo court over a social media post at Bishipada in Sonepur district.
Police said the two BJD leaders—husband of Binika block chairperson Ashok Nanda and vice chairman of Birmaharajpur block Narayan Luha—were remanded in judicial custody after their bail plea was rejected by the court.
According to police, one Nitish Kumar lodged a complaint alleging that he was asked to come to a place without being informed of the intention. Then suddenly, Nanda and Luha, along with nine other people, arrived.
"We took prompt action after we got prima facie evidence against the culprits of physically abusing the complainant. Further probe is on," said Himanshu Lal, IG, northern range.
Sources said the BJD leaders involved in the act reportedly owe allegiance to former Speaker and sitting Sonepur MLA Niranjan Pujari. Police said Nitish worked in a poultry farm at Birmaharajpur. He allegedly wrote some words raking up a previous political issue involving Nanda, who thought it tarnished his image.
"Nanda, along with Luha, planned to call Nitish to the poultry owner's house without giving him an inkling of what they were going to do. After he reached there, all 11 persons started abusing him, as per the complaint. The arrests were made in two phases," said Sonepur additional SP B Hari Prasad.
Nitish sustained injuries on his face and other parts of the body. The doctors already gave injury reports. All the accused were booked under sections 296 (showing obscene acts), 126 (wrongful restraint), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) of BNS.
