Cricket back in the 1970s and 1980s wasn't easy compared to that of the modern era. Nowadays, cricketers have the necessary sporting gears to keep themselves away from injury. But back in the day with less resources, there were numerous batsmen, who stood tall at the crease. Well, there was one such batsman, who took the concept of 'pain' to an all different level and literally put his body on the line to be called as India's best batter of express pace bowling. Yes, he is none other than Mohinder Amarnath, a true legend of the game and popularly known for withstanding unimaginable pain. The 1983 World Cup winner for India turned 74 on 24th September, 2024 and certainly deserves much more acclaim for his contribution to the sport. Think about the best bowlers back in the 70s and 80s. The dangerous West Indies bowlers in Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, then there is New Zealand's Richard Hadlee, Australia's legendary pacer Jeff Thompson and Pakistan's one of the all-time great all-rounders, Imran Khan. 'Jimmy' Amarnth took on each one of them without any fear and survived a fractured skull inflicted by Hadlee, got his teeth broken by Marshall, Michael Holding, 'The Whispering Death' sent him to hospital for stitches and Imran knocked him out unconscious. It's hard to fathom that despite of all the hardships, the person is still alive and kicking and got three centuries in Pakistan, two in the West Indies and a solitary ton against the Aussies under tough conditions. He played a combined total of 154 matches for India, scoring 6302 runs along with 13 centuries and negated the lethal power of express bowling with his sheer grit and determination. He was also the Man of the Match in both the final and semi-final of the 83' Cricket World Cup.When this brave batsman walked out to bat with his red handkerchief visible in his trouser pocket, his captain, teammates, and fans in the entire country felt secure and stable. All fell reassured when he walked out to bat.
