Tucked away in the tranquil waters of the Salcombe-Kingsbridge estuary lies a charming hamlet that's earned recognition as one of Britain's "poshest villages". Devon's South Pool settlement boasts rows of storybook dwellings, adorned with traditional thatched rooftops and embraced byverdant countryside.
This diminutive community houses roughly 150 inhabitants, ensuring tranquillity and serenity are in plentiful supply. Nevertheless, property values in this compact settlement average around £400,000 based on transactions from the past 12 months, as reported by Zoopla. The hamlet recently secured its place among Britain's 48 "poshest villages" according to The Telegraph's rankings.
South Pool also featured in Conde Nast Traveller's selection of the UK's 20 most stunning villages during 2022.
Despite its modest size, the settlement boasts rich heritage, with its enduring architecture and meandering pathways that "would befit any chocolate box or postcard", as noted by local accommodation provider Toad Hall Cottages.
The same company has branded the settlement as amongst the area's "hidden gems".
South Pool houses a Grade-I listed parish church, believed to originate from 1318, positioned at the settlement's elevated peak.
Additionally, visitors can enjoy the Millbrook Inn, a celebrated gastropub accessible by foot, motor vehicle and, remarkably, by watercraft. Tucked away between the embrace of land and sea, at the head of a tidal creek on the Salcombe estuary, the Millbrook Inn proudly proclaims itself a "hidden haven".
Here, visitors arriving by canoe, boat or even paddleboard can dock to enjoy a pint of local ale or indulge in a classic pub dish.
This picture-perfect spot is framed by the stunning English countryside, with verdant fields and foliage stretching into the distance. The scenery is especially striking on a sunny summer day as the sunlight bathes the rolling hills in a warm glow.
The tranquil waters of the South Hams are just a stone's throw away, making water sports a favourite pastime in the area. From guided canoe excursions to stand-up paddleboarding, there's plenty to keep the aquatic adventurer entertained.
Plus, the village is conveniently close to several charming beaches, such as Lancombe Beach, South Sands Beach, and Salcombe North Sands.
However, the rural dream does come at a premium. The Telegraph reports that some of the priciest homes in the vicinity have been snapped up for a hefty "£844,429".
On the other hand, Rightmove notes that properties in South Pool have seen an average selling price of £305,000 over the past year, reflecting the diverse range of property values in this idyllic corner of England.
