A drama that has been running for more than six seasons will come to an end this weekend, with a long-awaited finale. The Handmaid's Tale has kept viewers hooked for the past eight years, since its release. The American dystopian television series was created by Bruce Miller and based on the 1985 novel The Handmaid's Tale by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. It stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle, Max Minghella, Samira Wiley, Amanda Brugel, Bradley Whitford, Sam Jaeger and Ever Carradine.
The series synopsis reads: "Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter who was taken from her."
The series has received high praise from critics and fans and its 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes reflects that. Their consensus reads: "Setting its characters on a collision course with their own personal reckonings amid a desperate push against fascism, The Handmaid's Tale concludes on a high note."
Fans have dubbed the series as a "must-watch" and "one of the best shows I've ever watched".
The final episode will run for 53 minutes and provide a conclusion to the saga that it has been. Will June and Luke get their daughter, Hannah, back?
Amazon Prime viewers can access the final episode a day early as it arrives on the platform on Saturday.
The last episode of The Handmaid's Tale will air on Channel 4 at 10pm this Sunday.
