Taking the slow pace of life is made even easier on this stunning island. That's because this picturesque destination is a car-free zone, which means lush sights of bobbing fishing boats, whitewashed houses, and a labyrinth of charming alleys can all be soaked up on foot, by boat or even on horseback. The Greek island of Hydra is found less than two hours south of by ferry, making it a convenient destination for a day trip far from the busy streets of the Greek capital.
But Hydra's car-free stance is what truly put this stunning island on the map. The decision stemmed from a 1950s presidential decree that aimed to preserve its unique architectural character alongside its traditional lifestyle. The result? A tranquil paradise that's visually appealing with charm and serenity.

Moreover, the island's steep, narrow streets mean cars are completely impractical when it comes to navigating it.
Instead, locals use donkeys, with water taxis also being a key mode of transportation.
But there's so much more to this picturesque Greek island part of the Saronic group than just car-free zones, such as the exquisite architecture and neoclassical stone mansions, which sit prettily overlooking the island's port.
The quintessential Greek whitewashed houses are scattered throughout, spiralling invitingly off from the waterfront.

But it's also the island's unusual link with singer Leonard Cohen that adds to its uniqueness and mystery.
Cohen visited Hydra in the 1960s and was so awestruck by its poetic beauty that he bought a house on the island, which paid back respect to the legendary artist with a bench dedicated to him.
Cohen chose to live on the island for several years and even wrote "Bird on the Wire" which was said to be inspired by Hydra with American novelist Henry Miller describing the Greek spot as being "the epitome of flawless anarchy."
Temperatures In Hydra during June sit at an average of 29.5C and the climate is typically warm and sunny with a host of exhilarating activities on offer, including exploring scenic beaches, hiking, snorkeling and scuba diving.
As for must-visit sites when visiting Hydra, unique experiences are found at Mount Eros, Saint Nicholas Beach and the Profitis Ilias Monastery with the Lazaros Koundouriotis Mansion and the Komiseos Theotokou Monastery also coming in highly recommended.
"Truly spectacular. You will experience the simplicity and serenity of Greece at the same time," raved one review on TripAdvisor.
Another added: "The views in almost every direction are breathtaking with the mode of transport here all adding to its charm."
