A supercomputer has predicted that England will topple Germany again to win successive women's European Championship. There could also be revenge over Spain for the Lionesses, two years after they were beaten in the World Cup final.
Sarina Wiegman's side face a tough group but are predicted to advance seamlessly. France are first up for England, followed by the Netherlands, Wiegman's birthplace. A home nations clash with Wales will also prove tricky for the Lionesses. However, the supercomputer expects England to pass with flying colours.
The technology, devised by BoyleSport, simulates the entire tournament 10,000 times and uses current form, squad depth, historical pedigree, and recent qualifying data. The most consistent and probable scenario is then drawn. In the quarter-finals, it believes the most probable scenario is England facing Sweden, the potential runners-up in Group C.
A win in extra time seals a semi-final against 2023 World Cup nemeses Spain. The supercomputer predicts another gruelling match, and says it could result in an England victory on penalties.
England defeated Spain en route to facing Germany in the final of Euro 2022. History is set to repeat itself, according to the supercomputer. And remarkably for England, another victory over their old enemy could be on the cards.
It predicts that Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo and Ella Toone will score in a 3-1 victory, with captain Leah Williamson collecting the trophy again. Victory would seal England's place as the best team in Europe.
Meanwhile, England thrashed Jamaica 7-0 in their final friendly ahead of the Euros. Wiegman said afterwards: "I've been involved in many tournaments now. Things develop in the tournament. You have to be prepared. You have to adapt to what you have in front of you and see what happens and make big decisions. I think there is huge potential in this squad and we have many options.
"I am most of all excited - I'm excited about the team. We've had two weeks of training now and it was really good.
"We really got together, you can feel the fight in the team, that we want to go to the Euros now and go out there and play. And I'm not really busy with the third win, let's first get through it game by game "We all know what we want, and we also know what our opponents want. So, we'll bring it back and get ready for France."
