Chocolate bars are a beloved treat for both children and adults, but their high sugar content can lead to health and dental issues.
As a result, many are seeking healthier alternatives to their favourite indulgences. In response to this, GP Divya Sharma has shared a simple recipe for a healthier chocolate bar that bears a resemblance to a Twix.
The recipe requires just four basic ingredients to create these delicious snacks. The best part? You don't need extensive cooking skills or a lot of time to whip up these tasty treats. So, here's everything you need to know....
IngredientsThe doctor shared her recipe on Instagram, listing the following four ingredients....
1. Approximately 12 medjool dates - these should add a lovely sweetness
2. Four tablespoons of peanut butter - opt for the crunchy variety if you prefer extra texture
3. Six to eight shortbread biscuits - this gives the indulgent touch you'd expect from a chocolate bar
4. 250g of melted chocolate - choose dark chocolate if you're looking to incorporate some antioxidants
Medjool dates are renowned for their sweet, chewy texture. Their natural sweetness makes them an excellent sugar substitute in cooking.
They're packed with vitamins and nutrients and have a high fibre content, which helps keep you feeling satisfied for longer.
Also, peanut butter is a source of healthy fats and provides protein, as well as various vitamins and minerals.
If you're aiming for a lighter version of the recipe, you can leave out the shortbread biscuits.
This modification won't deliver an exact Twix replica but promises to still be scrumptious without the extra calories.
MethodDoctor Sharma begins by halving the dates lengthways and removing the pits, then arranging them on a baking tray. She then compresses the dates into a unified layer.
Ahandy tip is to use the bottom of a drinking glass or alternatively, sandwich them under a piece of baking parchment and apply pressure with a rolling pin.
After this, she spreads peanut butter over the compressed dates ensuring an even coverage. Then Dr Sharma methodically arranges the shortbread biscuits on top.
The final step is to pour over the melted chocolate. The doctor then uses a knife to draw a pattern across each bar before transferring them to the the freezer to set.
Once they are set, she cuts around the perimeter of each bar to separate them. Then, they are ready to savour!
Final verdictIn her Instagram post, Dr Sharma confidently claims: "A cheat's recipe for Twix bars. Dare I say they taste even better?!" Her clip has amassed thousands of views and likes and more than 200 comments.
An enthralled follower proclaimed: "Life just got better." While another eager to test the treat remarked: "Oh my word I need to try these."
One compliment went as far as to exclaim: "Looks so good!" and yet another admirer lauded Dr Sharma as a "genius as usual."
Another person was visibly impressed, commenting: "That looks insanely satisfying."
Likewise, other viewers praised the doctor's homemade 'Twix' bars, using adjectives like "amazing", "great", "yummy" and "delicious."
