Porridge is a breakfast mainstay in many homes with countless variations. However, one unusual ingredient suggested by a dietitian could make your porridge creamier and more satisfying.
While porridge is a comforting and convenient morning meal, it can sometimes leave you wanting more. One unexpected addition not only makes your porridge heartier but also provides an extra boost of protein. A food lover from Simply Recipes revealed their top tip for perfect porridge.
The foodie shared a tip from "Abbey Sharp, a registered dietitian" who recommended to add whipped egg whites into porridge for a light-as-air texture.
"Interestingly, when [I] incorporated a whole whipped egg into the oats, the result was both rich and creamy. Crucially, it didn't impart an eggy flavour, but simply helped to keep [me] satiated for longer," the foodie revealed.
To make the hearty breakfast, the optimal method is to incorporate your egg into your oats on the hob, stirring it over a medium heat for up to five minutes until it noticeably thickens. However, if you're in a bit of a rush, the microwave will suffice.
According to Simply Recipes, you should use approximately 63g of oats, combined with 180ml of your preferred milk and one egg.
It's recommended to add a pinch of salt for flavour, along with any additional spices or ingredients such as flaxseed, chia seeds, cinnamon, or nuts.
If using the microwave, aim to cook on a medium heat setting in four 30-second intervals, stirring after each one. Once the mixture transitions from a runny mess to a thick, creamy bowl of porridge, it's ready to be enjoyed.
The recipe also proposes a baked version for a slightly crispier, golden finish. Preheat your oven to roughly 177C (350F), and ensure you use a lightly greased oven-safe dish.
Fill it with your porridge mixture before baking for between 20 and 25 minutes. Allow it to cool before adding all your favourite toppings and tucking into a golden breakfast treat.
