Roy Jones Jr has expressed his readiness to take on if he's called upon to step in for . The 55-year-old boxing icon said he was eager to replace Tyson after the scheduled bout between Paul and Tyson, which was set for July 20, hit a snag.
Tyson had to withdraw from due to following an ulcer flare-up. Considered one of the most skillful fighters to ever grace the ring, Jones faced off with Tyson in an eight-round exhibition match that went un-scored four years prior.
Despite that, the illustrious multiple-weight world champion hasn't minced his words about the prospect of squaring off against , showing his willing to compete if given the nod. "I'm kind of thinking about that," Jones told Betway earlier this year regarding the possibility of facing Paul. "I might try and get into shape in case that happens. Maybe I get myself in shape for that."
"I never thought about doing it before, but with the situation of the fight, I think that's a great idea, and I'll be ready and in shape because if the fight doesn't happen, then the ideal guy to substitute in place of Mike Tyson to fight Jake Paul is something I have been thinking about. If the fight is out there, then yes"
Despite retiring six years ago, Jones couldn't resist a return to face former UFC champion Anthony Pettis last September, a bout he lost on points, reports . Addressing the swirling rumours of a potential match-up with Tommy Fury, Paul's previous opponent, and the chance to square off against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in an exhibition, the ex-heavyweight champ expressed his enthusiasm.
"There was obviously the Tommy Fury thing that came up, and then, the other day, somebody asked me whether I would fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in an exhibition, and that's crazy. I would jump on it, but now that this thing has came up, it makes sense to get into shape with Jake Paul, and it would be one of the biggest fights of this decade."
Jones, pondering the much-talked-about fight, conceded that he doesn't envision Paul overcoming Tyson, once dubbed the most feared man in boxing. He suggested that despite Paul's youth, Tyson's prowess will likely overwhelm him.
Speaking to FightHype, Jones said: "It's a young lion and an old lion. It's a great situation for them. It gives Jake a chance with Mike being as old as he is. I think it's a great opportunity for both fighters but I still think Mike is gonna be a little bit too much for Jake."
While Jones appears game for a clash, reports indicate that Tyson, at 58, has recovered from a severe ulcer flare-up that left him dizzy during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles in May, positioning him as fit to enter the ring against Paul.
Paramedics rushed to assist Tyson at LAX and, after a thorough check, confirmed his well-being despite the scare. Discussing the incident with Mail Online, Tyson disclosed that his dietary choices were to blame for the health scare, revealing: "I was doing too much bad food and stuff, and I got sick."
The highly anticipated bout between Tyson and Paul is scheduled for November 15 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. They are expected to duke it out before a potential crowd of 90,000 spectators, with the fight broadcasted live on Netflix.
