Fox News was interrupted for another "breaking news" update on . The announcement came shortly after he had just imposed on dozens of countries. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested Trump had used the tariffs to create maximum negotiating leverage. "This was his strategy all along," he said. "And you might even say that he goaded China into a bad position." Speaking on Fox news, presenter Charlie Gasparino admitted he wanted to tell viewers that Trump outsmarted the world, but believes this wasn't the case.
He said: "I'm an American, I support my president but that's not really what happened here from what I understand and I know, I'll get pushbacks, but here's what it is. From what I understand, and I'm getting this from people who are talking to the White House, what happened in the market overnight, the spike in yields on the third year and ten year bonds which show that people were dumping our bonds. He continued: "And who are those people dumping our bonds? Japan, the biggest holder of bonds, was selling bonds. That's what I'm getting from some very big money managers.
China, maybe to some extent, but it was largely Japan and others. If you have a mass sale of bonds, that means people are losing confidence in the US economy and the ability to do deals with us."
Gasparino added: "From what I understand, this is what forced the hand of this 90 day reprieve."
The American TV host admitted he can see the positive side of this as he noted "it is bringing people to the table," however, realised there's a down side as he urged viewers to "read between the lines".
"If you look at what Scott Bessent said, we have no deals. There's nobody that is really there saying, 'This is what we're going to do.' And they paused it anyway."
Trump announced a 90-day pause on some of the sweeping tariffs he announced last Wednesday. In a message shared on his social media platform Trump said that more than 75 nations have reached out to US representatives to negotiate a deal.
This show of goodwill has prompted the president to ease off the tariffs planned for them. , however, he added, did not show a similar attitude towards Washington, which has prompted him to raise the already eye-watering 104% tariff on Chinese imports to 125%.
He wrote: "Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World's Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately.
"At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the USA, and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable.
"Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
