Canary Islands protest LIVE: Holiday hotspot braced for anti-tourist demonstrations

Send Push

Up to 100,000 people are set to flood the streets across the Canary Islands today amid growing anger among locals.

The mass protest is part of an ongoing campaign on the islands to end overtourism.

Activists from the "20-0" movement will march in tourist hotspots including Playa Las Americas, Corralejo, Puerto del Carmen and Maspalomas. It is the largest protest planned on the islands since a similarly huge protest on April 20 - six months ago.

British tourists make up the largest group heading to the sunshine of the island chain, with around 5.7 million jetting to the region last year alone. This has prompted the British Foreign Office to issue a warning to Brits in the Canary Islands today over the risk of "unrest and violence" breaking out during the protests.
