has jokingly shared his concerns about the idea of Micah Richards replacing Gary Lineker as the host of .

Lineker has been the face of the BBC's flagship show since 1999, but reports are now speculating that a shock split is on the cards at the end of the season - with an announcement supposedly being drafted up.

The BBC hit back at the speculation by insisting that there is nothing for them to announce and Lineker also addressed reports by admitting that .

It is unclear whether Lineker is willing to extend his deal with the BBC at this stage, with a pay cut likely to be on the cards, and replacement options have been speculated about.

Lineker's colleague Richards has been tipped to be in the running for the potential vacancy, but Shearer has joked that he has his reservations about the ex-Manchester City star being offered such a significant role.

Speaking on the latest episode of , former England internationals commented on how bookmakers have priced Richards up as one of the leading candidates to succeed Lineker.

He said: "What's more concerning (is) I'm 4-1 to replace you." Shearer then responded: "That is a f***ing massive concern by the way. "I'm not signing my new contract if you're a presenter by the way."

Talk about who could be in the running to replace Lineker has been rife in recent weeks, especially after the BBC's likely succession plan was thrown into jeopardy earlier this year when the broadcaster sacked Jermaine Jenas with immediate effect.

The 41-year-old was axed over improper workplace behaviour allegations, with Jenas admitting to sending 'inappropriate messages' to women in the aftermath of his departure from the corporation.

Jenas was therefore released from his hosting duties on MOTD and The One Show, having previously been tipped to replace Lineker after impressing for the Beeb on their football coverage.

Lineker even spoke candidly about how Jenas would be a fitting replacement further down the line, though it remains to be seen whether he would give Richards' potential appointment his seal of approval given the light-hearted, humorous nature of their relationship at present - along with Shearer.
