New Delhi: A 55-year-old Unani doctor, Javed Akhtar, was shot dead in his cabin in a small three-bed hospital in Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj area at around 1.30 am on Thursday, news agency ANI reported on Friday.
According to hospital staff, the assailants were two juveniles of around 16-17 years.
The boys reached Nima Hospital at around 1 am with one asking for a change of the bandage in his toes. He had come to the hospital the previous night also. After the bandage was changed, they said they wanted to meet the doctor to get a prescription.
However, after entering the doctor’s cabin, the boys shot him in the head and feld the spot. Hearing the sound of the gunshot, hospital staff rushed to Akhtar’s cabin and found him lying unconscious and bleeding from his head.
The police suspect it to be a case of targeted killing and the boy visited the hospital a day earlier for a recce. They are analysing footage from the CCTV cameras installed inside the hospital to identify the accused. They have also appealed to the public to provide any information they may have about the assailants.
Coming barely two months of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, the Delhi murder of the doctor raises serious concern about the safety of healthcare workers.
