The Indian Coast Guard has appointed S Paramesh as its new Director General, effective Tuesday, October 15. Paramesh, who had been serving as the acting chief following the sudden passing of his predecessor Rakesh Pal, officially assumed his role on Monday.
With over 30 years of distinguished service, Paramesh has held various critical positions both at sea and ashore. His career highlights include commanding key vessels such as the Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel Samar and the Offshore Patrol Vessel Vishwast. He is also an alumnus of the National Defence College in New Delhi and the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington.
In addition to his leadership roles, Paramesh has served as the Deputy Director General for Operations and Coastal Security and as the Coast Guard Commander for the Eastern Seaboard. His dedication and contributions have earned him several honors, including the President's Tatrakshak Medal and the Tatrakshak Medal.
Paramesh's appointment comes after the untimely passing of DG Rakesh Pal, who suffered a cardiac arrest in August during an event in Chennai related to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre inauguration.

He served as the Coast Guard Region (East) and Coast Guard Region (West) head, managing critical maritime operations on both fronts. Additionally, from July 23, 2018, to August 7, 2023, he was the Coast Guard Commander for the Eastern Seaboard, overseeing coastal security and safeguarding vital maritime interests. Following this, he took on the role of Additional Director General of the Coast Guard, further cementing his leadership in the maritime defense force.
Awards and Recognition S Paramesh’s distinguished career has earned him multiple accolades. He is a recipient of the prestigious President's Tatrakshak Medal for Distinguished Service, the Tatrakshak Medal, and the Director General Coast Guard Commendation in 2012.
