Positive Talks on Seat-Sharing Ahead of Maharashtra Assembly Polls

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently met with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar as discussions intensify regarding the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections. This meeting, held on Tuesday night, was characterized as positive by CM Shinde, who mentioned that "everything was going on smoothly."

When asked about the seat-sharing arrangements at the city airport, Shinde responded, "The meeting was positive and a decision will be taken soon. Talks are moving ahead positively with coordination."

Amit Shah is currently on a two-day visit to Maharashtra. The ruling Mahayuti alliance, which includes the Shiv Sena led by Shinde, the BJP, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, has been in talks about how to share seats for the state assembly elections, expected to take place in November.

The meeting began at a hotel in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and was attended by Union ministers Amit Shah and Bhupender Yadav, along with CM Shinde and Deputy CM Fadnavis. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and NCP working president Praful Patel joined later, and discussions continued until approximately 12:30 AM on Wednesday.

Following the meeting, Shinde and his deputies departed for Chikalthana airport around 12:45 AM, but none of the leaders spoke to the media at the venue.

Last week, Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced that the constituents of the Mahayuti alliance had reached a consensus on contesting 70 to 80 percent of the 288 assembly seats. He suggested that the main criterion for ticket distribution will be the winnability of candidates.

In the current assembly, the BJP holds the position of the single largest party with 103 MLAs, while the Shiv Sena has 40, the NCP 41, and the Congress also 40. Additionally, the Shiv Sena (UBT) has 15 MLAs, the NCP (SP) has 13, and there are 29 others, with some seats remaining vacant.
