OpenAI's Orion Set to Revolutionize AI with 100x Performance Boost Over GPT-4

San Francisco: OpenAI is gearing up to release its latest AI model, codenamed 'Orion', by December of this year. This new model is anticipated to be significantly more powerful than its predecessor, GPT-4, potentially boasting capabilities up to 100 times greater.

A report indicates that, unlike previous releases such as GPT-4o and OpenAI o1, 'Orion' will not be made widely available through ChatGPT at its launch. Instead, OpenAI plans to first offer access to select companies to assist them in developing their own products and features.

As of now, OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, have not commented on these developments.

In related news, Microsoft is preparing to host 'Orion' on its Azure platform as early as November, though they too have chosen not to provide a statement on the matter.

The aim of this initiative is to eventually merge OpenAI's large language models (LLMs) to create a more advanced model that could approach what is known as artificial general intelligence (AGI).

The launch of 'Orion' follows a period of significant investment for OpenAI, which recently secured $6.6 billion in funding, valuing the company at $157 billion. However, the company is currently undergoing restructuring as a for-profit entity, with three top executives, including Chief Technical Officer Mira Murati, having left in recent weeks. Of the original 13 founders from 2015, only three remain.

Reports suggest that Murati is in the process of raising funds for her own AI startup, while the new investment for OpenAI was led by Thrive Capital, which contributed approximately $1.3 billion. Microsoft invested just under $1 billion, Nvidia pledged $100 million, and SoftBank contributed around $500 million.

OpenAI has expressed that this new funding will enhance its capabilities in frontier AI research, increase computational power, and support the development of tools designed to help solve complex problems.
