Kolkata: Junior doctors and nurses at Sagar Dutta Hospital in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district staged a 'work stop' agitation after they were allegedly attacked by relatives of a patient. Following the incident, police have arrested four people, who are family members of a 30-year-old woman patient who died during treatment.

Barrackpore Police Commissioner Alok Rajoria said those arrested for attacking doctors and nurses at the hospital on Friday evening have been produced in a Barrackpore court. He said several specific complaints have been received from hospital authorities and CCTV footage of the hospital has been seized as evidence in the case. Police are examining the CCTV footage to ascertain if others were also involved in the attack. West Bengal Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam visited the hospital and interacted with doctors and nurses there. He said doctors had concerns about safety and have been assured that safety measures will be taken in this case. After the incident, security has been beefed up at the hospital and additional CCTV cameras have been installed for surveillance.

Three junior doctors, three nurses and a health worker were injured in the attack. Officials said that after the incident, a large number of police personnel including Rapid Action Force have been deployed at the hospital. This incident happened a week after the junior doctors called off their strike in protest against the rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The junior doctors had withdrawn their strike after 41 days of protest.
