Amnesty Calls For Release Of Iranian Woman Who stripped to her underwear in protest

Amnesty International has demanded the immediate release of a young woman who removed most of her clothing in protest against harassment outside her university in Tehran on November 2. Iranian authorities detained the student after she stripped to her underwear on the street near the campus. Initial video footage of the incident was shared by an Iranian student channel, the Amir Kabir newsletter, and later circulated by the Hengaw rights group, Amnesty International, and other organizations.

"Pending her release, authorities must protect her from torture and other ill-treatment and ensure she has access to her family and a lawyer," Amnesty stated. They further called for "independent and impartial investigations" into allegations of beatings and sexual violence during her arrest, urging accountability for those involved.

Videos of the incident were shared on social media, showing her protest, which was captured by bystanders from a nearby building. Another video depicted her being taken away in a car by men in plain clothes, driven to an unknown location.

Following her arrest, significant protests erupted among the student community in Iran, with many expressing their support for Daryaei and condemning the oppressive actions of the regime on various social media platforms.

The Amir Kabir newsletter alleged that she was beaten during her arrest. While these claims remain unverified, Iran's conservative Fars news agency acknowledged the incident, including a heavily blurred image of the student.

According to Fars, the student had been dressed in "inappropriate clothes" in class and stripped down after being warned by security personnel to adhere to the dress code. Amir Mahjob, the director of public relations at Azad University, claimed in a post on X that the student, who is separated from her husband and has two children, "had a mental disorder." Additionally, the local newspaper Farhikhtegan reported that she was admitted to a mental health facility.
