Team India’s impressive batting display on the very first day of the Leeds Test caught everyone by surprise. Few had predicted that India would put the hosts under so much pressure right from the start of this challenging England tour. Captain Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s centuries rattled the English team and fans alike. This stellar performance also gave former Indian batsman and popular commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu the perfect chance to strongly criticize former England captain Michael Vaughan, labeling him a ‘fool’ for his earlier comments.
Just days before the five-match Test series began, Michael Vaughan had made a bold prediction. Known for his outspoken views and controversial statements, Vaughan had declared in a promotional video that India was headed for another defeat in England. Citing India’s previous poor records in the last few series, he confidently claimed that this team would once again fail.
However, on day one at Leeds, Gill, Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul turned the tables with powerful and confident batting, putting the English bowlers on the backfoot. Navjot Singh Sidhu took this opportunity to respond sharply to Vaughan’s inaccurate forecasts during a Star Sports segment.
Sidhu said, “Fools grow even without watering. Michael Vaughan, your predictions are always wrong. First, you doubted India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, then said South Africa would never beat Australia in the World Test Championship final. I hope you keep quiet about India’s victories now.”
Sidhu didn’t stop there; he also took a dig at England’s bowling attack, which struggled against India’s aggressive batting. “Look at your bowling attack—it looks so ordinary. Three Indian batsmen came out of their crease and played big shots. Just making noise doesn’t help,” Sidhu remarked.
Clearly, day one at Leeds was a painful reminder to Vaughan and England that underestimating Team India can backfire dramatically.
