You've been storing avocados all wrong - hack will keep them fresh for weeks

Send Push

Avocados are a staple in many British households, but a common storage hack is actually doing more harm than good.

Storing avocados in water to keep them fresh is a myth that's been debunked by experts, who warn it can lead to the growth of harmful bacteria.

Instead, a simple squeeze of lime juice can keep avocados fresh for weeks. Karl Graham, a food storage expert from Click Storage, explained: "Storing avocados with lime juice has become popular despite their rising costs and temperamental ripening process."

"The acidity in lime juice helps to slow down this enzyme, keeping the avocados vibrant, green, and fresh for longer. This is particularly beneficial for those who like to meal prep or stock up on avocados for the week."

To keep your avocados fresh, follow these simple steps:

1. Leave newly bought avocados at room temperature until they're fully ripe. Storing unripe avocados in the fridge can prevent them from ripening properly, affecting their flavour, reports .

2. Check if your avocado is ripe by gently twisting the stem. If it comes off easily and the flesh underneath is green, it's ready to eat.

3. Once ripe, squeeze a bit of lime juice over the avocado to create a protective barrier against bacteria and air. This will keep it fresh for weeks.

Karl, a food expert, has dished out a nifty trick to keep your avocados fresh and tasty. He advises: "When avocados are exposed to air, enzymes in the fruit react with oxygen, turning the flesh brown. The citric acid in citrus juice helps to inhibit these enzymes, preserving the green colour of the avocado."

He suggests that once your avocado is ripe, slice it open, give the flesh a light brush with lime juice, pop it in an airtight container, and stash it in the fridge.

Not only does this method prevent waste and save cash, but Karl also notes: "Storing avocados with lime juice can also enhance their flavour. The lime juice's tartness cuts through the avocado's creamy richness, creating a delicious balance of flavours."

Plus, he adds, "Lastly, lime juice helps retain nutritional value, such as potassium, folate, and vitamin C, while extending shelf life and saving money."
