Brits have reported a sudden major with a spike in people unable to send or receive messages this afternoon. The social media giant is down for thousands of users globally, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.
Many have reported having difficulty in uploading data and sending messages with a map of the UK showing that most of the cases are in London but there are also sizeable numbers with issues in the northwest of England and the Glasgow area.
Downdetector statistics for the UK showed that 49% of people who reported problems had them when trying to send messages. While 46% had difficulty with the app and a further 4% where struggling to use the voice facility on WhatsApp.

There are currently more than 100 people who are reporting problems in the UK compared to just six an hour ago. And the problem is not just nationwide with people telling of having issues globally.
services have been affected by a disruption, leaving hundreds of users unable to connect, send messages across both the mobile application and the web-based platform around the . India appears to have been particularly badly affected with more than 3,000 reports logged and more than 90% of these citing issues with sending messages, but also in the United States there are also nearly 3,000 reports of problems.
The remaining reports indicated server connection problems and general app malfunctions. Globally thousands of users have reported similar issues. Many people have taken to social media also to report their problems from countries as widely spread out as Canada, the USA, Brazil and Singapore.
"Yeah Canada here, can't send messages, photos in any group chats, direct chats working fine," wrote one person on . Then on X another said: "Cannot send messages to group.. whats app down?"
A further person similarly wrote on X: "Is WhatsApp down ? I have been trying to upload the status but it couldn’t." And another comment read: "Random recipients and group. Some groups no problem, some not working. Same as individual recipients." Some users mentioned difficulties while accessing and , which are also owned by Meta.
This is not the first time this year that WhatsApp has had a significant outage and in February at least 68,000 users of the application along with Messenger, Facebook and TikTok were impacted.
Website showed large spikes for in particular, with people saying they had been affected on February 28. On that occasion in the UK a map showed that most of the affected WhatsApp users were in London but also many people were unable to use the application in and Glasgow.
Recently, we reported how a major system on Britain crashed in a 'global' outage. Users of the Sage system reported being unable to access some financial accounts on the system.
Sage Payroll is a cloud-based software platform that manages payroll management for around six million businesses in the UK and multiple countries around the , allowing bosses to create employee records, calculate payments and deductions, and submit payroll information to . It also offers an HR management system.
Sage's online dashboard currently displays a "partial outage" across North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific. The company said in a statement: "We have identified a global issue impacting a subset of trying to log in to access the service. We are currently investigating.
