Steps fans just realising they've been singing iconic lyric wrong for 28 years

You might have been singing your favourite Steps lyrics wrong for 28 years. These days, we're blessed with the that allows us to instantly look up the lyrics to any song we want. But just a short time ago this wasn't possible, and many people have spent years singing the wrong lyrics to some of their favourite songs as a result.

Now, fans are realising that they've been singing the wrong lyrics to a massive 90s hit. The British pop group formed in 1997, and while they had a string of hits that were covers, including Tragedy, Chain Reaction, and Kylie Minogue's Better The Devil You Know, one of their biggest chart-toppers was an original song titled 5, 6, 7, 8.

Released as a single in 1997 and forming part of their debut album Step One in 1998, the country pop hit became a staple at school discos - but did you know you've probably been singing the words wrong?

The discrepancy was shared on by a woman named Lisa Mercer, who regularly shares videos in which she highlights misheard lyrics in some popular songs.

In her video about 5, 6, 7, 8, she played a part of the song and wrote: "My obsession from a Western, my dad's called Dave. Or whatever Steps said."

The line comes from the chorus of the catchy hit, and while those lyrics might be hilarious, they're not quite right. The end of the line should be "My dancefloor date", but fans were quick to admit that they've never known what the real lyrics are.

There were many commenters on Lisa's video that suggested they also thought the lyrics were simply shouting out someone's dad, with one person "seriously" asking if they'd actually been singing it wrong this whole time.

One person said: "Isn't that the words? Serious question."

Another added: "It's funny because my obsession with Western is from my dad, who is called Dave."

While a third exclaimed: "I can't unhear that now!"

Even those who knew those weren't the correct lyrics were left confused in the comments. Many were convinced they had the right words, but were soon told they were still getting it wrong.

Someone wrote: "Isn't it 'I danced all day'? That's what I've been singing."

Another fan questioned: "I've been singing 'My obsession for a Western dance for a date. Is that right?"

5, 6, 7, 8 was the debut single for Steps in 1997, after each group member - Lee Latchford-Evans, Lisa Scott-Lee, Faye Tozer, Claire Richards and Ian "H" Watkins - responded to a magazine advertisement seeking auditions for a pop band.

The song actually only peaked at number 14 in the UK singles chart, making it one of their lowest chart positions in the UK, but has gone onto become their third-best-selling single. However, it was a huge hit in , where it reached number one, and both Belgium and New Zealand, where it got to number two.
