Ryan Reynolds issued a one-word response to Paul Mullin’s explanation for his alleged bite during Wrexham’s stormy clash with Birmingham City.

The League One high-fliers and their A-list owners went head-to-head on Monday, with the Blues emerging 3-1 victors. Many eyes were fixed on the St Andrew’s directors’ box, which included minority Blues owner and NFL icon Tom Brady and Reynolds’ co-owner at Wrexham, Rob McElhenney, plus Brady’s pal David Beckham.

It was all happening on the pitch too, with Jack Marriott opening the scoring for the Welsh side in front of a crowd of just under 28,000. Goals either side of half-time from big-money signing Jay Stansfield put the Blues in front.

Tomoki Iwata’s stunner helped seal the points before Birmingham’s Krystian Bielik was sent off late on after collecting a second yellow card. Tempers became frayed, with a tangle between Alex Cochrane and Mullin triggering a mass brawl.

Amid the initial altercation, Mullin appeared to almost sink his teeth into the leg of Cochrane, who had landed on the striker. After a clip of the bizarre incident swept across social media, Mullin made light of it, posting on X: “I know what it looks like.. but it didn’t happen. Although you can tell his leg was thinking about attacking my mouth.”

In response, Deadpool star Reynolds, who was not at the game, simply posted “Welshpool” with laughing faces and a crossed swords emoji.

Many watching fans didn’t see the funny side though, with one posting: “He considered biting him, let’s be honest.” Another blasted: “Throw the book at him.” A third asked: “Surely a retrospective ban has to come for this kind of thing?”

Others jokingly asked if he was related to former Liverpool and Barcelona star Luis Suarez, who was embroiled in several biting incidents during his career. Wrexham’s James McClean was in the thick of the subsequent brawl and was soon taken off by his manager Phil Parkinson.

It was Wrexham’s first defeat of the season as their hopes of a fifth straight clean sheet were derailed by the league’s title favourites. The Dragons remain top of the table thanks to a better goal difference than Birmingham.

Parkinson said: “It’s a good learning curve, we’ve hardly conceded a goal this season and haven’t been behind in a game.

“At the start of the season if you said you’re going to be top of the league and after the first three away games you’re going to only lose once, we’d have all taken that.

“Five games unbeaten, during the season you will lose games of football, that’s inevitable – we’ll take the lessons into the next few games. We’re top of the league and have 40 games to go but any defeat is tough to take.”
