Primark introduces new charge in stores today - but shoppers say 'not worth it'

Primark is to start charging customers 15p for a paper bag from today. The charge applies on small, medium and large paper bags - despite these previously being free.

Some customers have spotted signs in stores, detailing the new fee. shoppers have also been reacting to the news after the update was first shared on the group Bag a Weekly Bargain.

A post on the Facebook group read: "Unfortunately the days of a free bag from PRIMARK are nearly over. From May 12th, PRIMARK will be charging 15p each for their paper bags."

One customer replied to the post, saying: "They break if you have more than 4 items in, not even worth 15p." Another said: "Would never pay 15p for a paper bag to only use once crazy."

A third replied: "I always pay for the strong ones, rained once and my clothes fell out coz bag got soggy." Another commented: "Just take your own bag."

Primark said in a statement on its website: “Across our business we use thousands of paper bags every day. And while our paper bags are made from 100% recycled and recyclable materials, we want to reduce single-use paper waste in our business.

“Like most retailers, from the 12th May 2025, we will have a small charge for our paper bags. Reducing single-use paper is one small step we and our customers can take to reduce waste. We hope this encourages more shoppers to switch to re-usable bags.”

It comes after Primark launched its click and collect service in 24 more stores last month, having pledged to complete the rollout to all 187 stores in England, Wales and by this summer.

The service allows shoppers to shop items across its womenswear, menswear, children’s clothing and homeware ranges online, to then pick up their items from their nearest store. Unfortunately, Primark still doesn't allow shoppers to order online for home delivery.
