Heavy rain threatens Easter bank holiday washout as parts of UK set to be hit by downpours

Parts of Britain could be set for an Easter bank holiday washout, according to new forecasts. Outbreaks of rain are expected across and western Scotland today, while more widespread downpours are forecast on Easter Monday.

Showers are also forecast this morning in the southeast, before a clearer picture emerges later in the day. This mix of "sunshine and showers" is expect to last into next week, according to the , with some "warm spells of hazy sunshine" between rain.

Daytime maximum temperatures are meanwhile forecast in the mid-to-high teens today, before dropping towards 12-14C on Easter Monday.

A Met Office forecast shared on X (formerly ) said: "Easter morning will be rather grey with outbreaks of rain across Northern Ireland and the far west of Scotland.

"Plenty of sunshine developing elsewhere apart from the southeast of England where there will be a scattering of showers first thing."

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Steven Skeates added: "Easter Sunday looks to be the widely drier day of the weekend.

"Cloud amounts will vary, but most places should see some bright or sunny spells at times.

"Parts of the far south and west may remain cloudier with a few showers around. Temperatures look generally close to the seasonal average.

"Things probably turn a little more unsettled again on Monday, with outbreaks of rain/showers in the south and west, tending to spread northwards and perhaps becoming heavy at times, though there is currently a lot of uncertainty in the details."

sufferers have meanwhile been warned to expect higher pollen counts in some areas on Easter Sunday and Monday, potentially triggering symptoms.

According to the , pollen levels will be 'high' in the southeast and East Anglia on Sunday, 'moderate' across most of northern England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and 'low' in the north of Scotland.

Pollen counts will then drop to 'moderate' in East Anglia and the southeast on Monday.
