Ederson left out by Man City as he approves transfer - but opening offer rejected

Send Push

Ederson has been AXED by Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side took on Wolverhampton Wanderers in their Premier League opener on Saturday evening, but the Brazilian was left out of the squad, with his future increasingly up in the air.

Ederson - City’s No.1 since his arrival from Benfica back in 2017 - was a surprise absentee as summer signing James Trafford was named in the starting XI, while German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega took the reserve spot on the bench. Ederson’s future lies away from the Etihad Stadium. Turkish side Galatasaray have been linked with a move for the goalkeeper and, according to Metro, have already made an opening bid worth £8.5m.

But City want more to sell. Ederson is keen for a fresh start, having given the green light to the switch. Pep Guardiola has already spoken out on Ederson’s future and claimed that he wants to keep him around for the foreseeable future.

Asked on Friday if the Brazilian would travel to Wolverhampton, the City boss replied: “Apparently, yeah.

“Ederson didn’t come to me and said he wanted to leave or he has an offer. All the players here are our players and I want them. What’s going to happen in three weeks [before the window closes], nobody knows.”

Asked who was his No.1 for the season, he replied: “Right now, Eddy [Ederson]. He’s fit, yeah.”

Guardiola added: “At the end, as always, the desire of the players is above everything but then they have to find an agreement with the club. If they don’t reach an agreement, the player will be here because the club spends money on those players.”

Asked if he had spoken to either Ederson or Savinho - who has been linked with Spurs - Guardiola replied: “No. If they want to leave, they will come to me. If they want to leave, they will knock on my door.”

However, City are in talks with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma over a move to the Etihad after the Italian was made surplus to requirements at the Parc des Princes by Luis Enrique and the club's hierarchy. Donnarumma has refused to sign a new contract on lesser terms in the French capital.

Ederson has been with Man City since 2017 and has gone on to make 372 appearances in all competitions. In the time since, he has won 18 trophies including six Premier League titles.
