The Haryana government has made a new IVF policy. Accordingly, if a couple already has a girl child and is planning a second child through IVF, then the couple will have to take permission from the government. This decision has been taken to correct the sex ratio in the state.

The Haryana government has implemented a new rule to maintain the sex ratio. Couples who are already parents of a daughter and now want to have a second child through IVF will have to take permission from the government. The couple will have to give the reason for IVF and also inform when they want to do it. Parents of a girl child will not be able to undergo IVF without government permission. This rule has been issued by the Health Department of Haryana. This decision has been taken so that the trend of gender selection through the IVF process can be stopped.
Under the new rule, the couple will now have to apply to the District Appropriate Authority. In this, the birth certificate of the first child will have to be submitted. Medical information of previous pregnancy and miscarriage will have to be given. The reason for undergoing IVF will have to be given. If any couple does this without permission, legal action will be taken against them. A major reason for making this rule is also believed to be the falling sex ratio in Haryana.
Sex ratio is falling in Haryana
The sex ratio at birth in Haryana has fallen to 910 girls per 1000 boys in 2024, which is a matter of concern for the state. While in 2018 and 2019 this figure had reached 914 and 923 respectively. Gender selection done during IVF is believed to be a major reason behind this decline. It is believed that in some IVF centers, information about the sex of the child is shared with the parents. This is because in IVF the embryo is prepared in the lab. From which the gender can be identified. Doing so is against the rules.
It is feared that in the last few years, people are finding out the sex of the child in advance with the help of IVF technology. This is reducing the number of girls. Despite campaigns like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, there is no improvement in the sex ratio. Keeping this in mind, this new rule has been made. It is expected that the new guideline will improve the sex ratio in the state and illegal efforts like fetal sex selection will be curbed.
IVF clinics will have to follow these rulesIt will be mandatory to report all treatments and embryo selection to the health department
Under no circumstances will only male embryos be implanted
