According to a statement issued by the army, on the night of May 8, Pakistan sent about 300 to 400 missiles and drones towards India's borders. However, India's S-400 "Sudarshan Chakra" air defense system eliminated most of the threats in the air itself.
According to the army, this attack lasted for about three days, but the Indian security system promptly foiled every attempt of the enemy. After this incident, the Russian-made S-400 air defense system has once again come into the limelight and people are showing a lot of interest in its capabilities.
What is S-400 air defense system?S-400 is a state-of-the-art air defense system developed by Russia. It is considered one of the most effective and reliable defense systems in the world. India bought five squadrons of it from Russia in 2018 under a deal worth Rs 35,000 crore. They have been deployed on India's western and northern borders in view of potential threats from China and Pakistan.
This system has the capability to fire 72 missiles at a time and is capable of operating in temperatures ranging from -50 to 70 degrees Celsius. Its radar system can track enemy movements up to a distance of 600 kilometers and can destroy any target within a range of 400 kilometers.
Equipped with four types of missiles- The S-400 system consists of four missiles with different ranges:
- 48N6E3: High-speed missile with a range of 250 kilometres.
- 40N6E: Long range missile with a range of 400 km.
- 9M96E and 9M96E2: Fast and accurate short-range missiles.
According to media reports, the most expensive missile of the S-400 system is 40N6E, which can cost around 1 to 2 million dollars (about 8 to 16 crore rupees). The price of other missiles ranges from 3 lakh dollars to 1 million dollars.
