Day 4 of the first Test between England and India at Headingley ended with the match beautifully poised, as India set a challenging target of 371 runs for the hosts. At stumps, England were 21 for no loss in 6 overs, with openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley unbeaten and looking steady at the crease.
The day began with India looking to build on their slender lead. Thanks to a solid and composed century from KL Rahul, who scored 137 off 247 balls with 18 boundaries, and another impactful knock from vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who added a brisk 118 off 140 balls with 15 fours and 3 sixes, India managed to post a competitive 364 all out in their second innings.

England's bowlers toiled hard on a flat pitch, with Josh Tongue and Brydon Carse leading the attack by picking up three wickets each. The Indian middle and lower order chipped in with small but valuable contributions to stretch the lead beyond 350, giving the visitors a strong chance of a series-opening victory.
A recap of the 1st innings
Earlier in the match, India had posted a commanding 471 in their first innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal gave India a solid start with a fluent 101 off 158 balls, including 16 fours and a six. Captain Shubman Gill held the innings together with a classy 147 off 227 deliveries, while Rishabh Pant entertained the crowd with a spectacular 134 off 178 balls, hammering 12 boundaries and 6 sixes.
For England, Ben Stokes led from the front with the ball, taking 4 for 66 in 20 overs, while Josh Tongue matched him with 4 for 86 in an equally impressive spell.
In response, England posted 465 in their first innings. Ollie Pope was the star performer with a fluent 106 off 137 balls. Ben Duckett supported well with 62 off 94 deliveries, and Harry Brook narrowly missed a century, falling for 99 off 112 balls. Jasprit Bumrah led India’s bowling with a superb five-wicket haul, finishing with 5 for 83, while Prasidh Krishna took 3 wickets but was slightly expensive, conceding 128 runs in 20 overs.
As the match heads into its final day, all three results are still possible. England need 350 more runs with all ten wickets intact, while India will be aiming for early breakthroughs to take a 1–0 lead in the series. With the pitch beginning to wear and pressure building, Day 5 promises to be a thrilling finish to an already intense Test match.
